The same name across different engines

Which 320i do you drive

A 320i is not always a four-cylinder turbo. Tell us the year and chassis details before parts, oil quantities or repair methods are selected.

  1. E46

    Naturally aspirated six-cylinder

E46 320i cars include M52TÜ and M54 six-cylinder applications. Assess age, service history, leaks and cooling condition. Use the six-cylinder oil-service starting price rather than assuming the modern four-cylinder offer applies.

  2. E90 family

    Four-cylinder with market differences

BMW's E90 fitment information lists N43 and N46 320i applications. Those differences matter to compatible ignition, fuel and engine components. Diagnose the actual running complaint before choosing a parts list.

  3. F30 and G20

    Turbocharged four-cylinder versions

The F30 introduced a turbocharged four-cylinder 320i. Production date and market still matter, including different EfficientDynamics specifications. Later 320i engines require their own parts and procedures; do not apply an N20 repair plan to every car.

A badge or engine-cover appearance is not enough to order parts. Modifications and import specification also matter. BMW's F30 technical information describes a period application. For another model, start from our 3 Series repair overview.

Select the concern that matches your car

The symptom guides the next check

A leak, unusual noise and coolant loss need different investigations. Choose a concern to see the relevant repair decisions.

Your main concern
Gloved hands inspect a valve-cover edge and oil-filter housing on a four-cylinder engine

Separate the leak source from the running fault

Trace oil at the cover, housing or lower engine before ordering a gasket. A cracked assembly or ventilation fault can change the repair.

  • For rough idle, combine codes and live readings with appropriate ignition, intake, fuel or mechanical tests.
  • A spark-plug service follows the schedule or findings; a warning alone does not prove every coil needs replacement.

Our valve-cover repair service explains gasket-only and complete-cover proposals.

Establish the source before quoting a timing repair

Describe a cold-start rattle, whine or oil warning accurately. Check oil condition and relevant readings, then distinguish timing components from accessory drives and other noise sources.

  • Selected N20 applications have specific timing-chain and oil-pump-drive assessment procedures.
  • A quote should identify the affected drive, required parts, labour, fluids and final checks.

BMW's N20 chain bulletin includes selected F30 320i vehicles. It is a US warranty document, not a recall or proof that every 320i needs this repair. Ask the authorised BMW network about any VIN-specific entitlement.

Find the loss and test operation

Inspect accessible hoses, connections, reservoir and radiator. Suitable pressure testing and operating checks help separate leaks from pump, thermostat or fan faults.

  • Mechanical and electric main pumps need different parts and procedures.
  • Confirm coolant, bleeding, testing and any separate work for overheating damage.

Compare water-pump repair with radiator repair after the cause is established.

Overheating or a red oil-pressure warning Stop safely and switch off. Do not open a hot coolant cap or keep restarting to reproduce a serious warning. Call about appropriate recovery.

A service plan based on what is due

Service the car you have

Use the applicable maintenance information, records and service indicator, including Condition Based Service where fitted. Missing history calls for a baseline check, not an automatic replacement of every consumable.

Oil filters and air filters do different jobs and must match the exact engine
  1. Read the records

Separate service items due by time or mileage from faults needing repair. Send the last-service date, mileage and a display photo.

  2. Specify the work

Match oil, filters and plugs to the engine. Brake fluid, belts, tyres and other wear items need their applicable schedule or condition checks.

  3. Record the result

The invoice should identify completed tasks and remaining advisories. Reset the service display only for the relevant completed maintenance.

Do not book a universal timing-belt replacement or gearbox overhaul simply because the car reaches 60,000 or 100,000 km. Confirm the fitted timing drive and its applicable procedure; the N20 uses a chain. An auxiliary drive belt is a separate item. Our oil-service information and BMW service options help compare the work.

The right system for the concern

Care beyond the engine

Gearbox and clutch

Identify manual or automatic fitment before selecting fluids, filters or repair parts. A fluid service and internal repair have different purposes. Compare gearbox diagnosis with clutch replacement.

On xDrive-equipped cars, driveline, transfer-case and tyre findings need their own assessment.

Brakes tyres and suspension

Measure wear and isolate vibration or knocks. Use brake repair, suspension assessment or wheel alignment for the work required.

Tyre rotation depends on tyre sizes, direction and manufacturer guidance. Do not assume staggered wheels can swap front to rear.

Starting and electrical supply

Test battery condition, charging and relevant circuits before recommending a replacement battery. Correct specification and applicable registration matter.

A repeat discharge can need a separate drain investigation; it is not automatically another faulty battery.

Reduced braking or unstable handling A soft pedal, major fluid loss or unsafe handling needs immediate advice. Arrange suitable recovery rather than driving to reproduce the fault.

Before you book

BMW 320i repair questions

Send the year, mileage and main concern. The workshop can request chassis details when needed for compatible parts.

Is every BMW 320i a four-cylinder car

No. The E46 320i includes six-cylinder petrol applications, while the E90 320i uses four-cylinder engines and later generations introduced turbocharged four-cylinder versions. Year, market and chassis details establish your exact fitment. The badge alone does not identify compatible parts or the oil quantity.

How much does a BMW 320i service cost

The workshop publishes oil service from AED 350 for four-cylinder engines and AED 450 for six-cylinder engines, minor service from AED 650 and major service from AED 1,500. The scan starts from AED 150. Included tasks and the fitted total are confirmed for your vehicle; repair budgets are separate from these service offers.

Does my 320i need a timing belt at a fixed mileage

Do not apply the old universal mileage rule. Establish the fitted engine and its actual timing-drive maintenance or assessment procedure. The N20 uses a timing chain, and its applicable diagnostic findings guide repair. An auxiliary belt is a different part. A gearbox overhaul is also not a routine mileage-based service item.

Does the N20 bulletin mean every 320i has a recall

No. The linked BMW of North America document concerns a component-specific warranty extension for selected applications, including certain F30 320i vehicles. It explicitly is not a recall. It neither proves your car has that fault nor establishes free repair in the UAE. Ask the authorised BMW network to check any VIN-specific entitlement.

Will changing spark plugs cure a rough idle

Only when plugs are due or the findings support them. Ignition, intake, fuel, electrical and mechanical faults can produce similar symptoms. Combine the complaint with codes and suitable tests before buying a set of coils, injectors or other parts.

Is tyre rotation included for every 320i

The fitted tyre sizes, direction, wheel arrangement and manufacturer guidance determine whether rotation is appropriate. Staggered front and rear fitments cannot automatically swap axles. Alignment should follow the relevant inspection findings or repair procedure rather than an assumed universal interval.

How long will the repair take and what warranty applies

Assessment, parts supply, repair and final checks are separate stages. Ask for the expected timing and written parts or labour coverage for the selected work, including exclusions and the claim process. No universal turnaround or blanket warranty is stated for every repair.

Can you collect my 320i in Dubai

The workshop offers free pickup and delivery within Dubai. Describe overheating, braking faults or a car that will not start before dispatch so suitable recovery and any separate charge can be agreed. A Call or WhatsApp starts an enquiry; the visit and assessment charges still need confirmation.
