Model fitment

Identify the 635d you drive

The 635d came as an E63 Coupé and E64 Convertible. Both use a 3.0-litre common-rail straight-six diesel with Variable Twin Turbo and a six-speed automatic.

See the BMW 6 Series repair overview for other models or BMW’s 635d launch specifications.

E63 CoupéTell us the model year and any previous engine or exhaust work.
E64 ConvertibleFor roof or water ingress faults, tell us where the roof stops or where the trim first gets wet.
Imports and previous modificationsTell us about changes to the exhaust or engine software if you know of any.
Parts fitmentWe confirm the VIN and fitted equipment when parts need ordering.

Symptoms

Start with what the car is doing

Choose the symptom you noticed to see the next checks.

Power drops under loadCompare requested and actual boost and check the air path.
DPF warning comes backCheck pressure readings and what may be blocking regeneration.
Hard startingCompare how quickly the engine turns and whether rail pressure builds.
Coolant or oil level dropsIdentify which fluid is leaking and trace where it starts.
Shudder or shift delayNote whether it happens during a shift or at a steady speed.
Convertible roof stopsNote where it stops or whether it reaches the latch.

Loss of power

Check the air path before pricing a turbo

Tell us whether power drops from low revs, during a steady pull or when the engine warms up. The conditions help us reproduce the fault.

Example of a BMW diesel charge-air inspection

Low power from low revsWe review stored faults and compare requested and actual boost under suitable conditions.

Air leak or damaged connectionWe inspect charge-air hoses and connections and test for leaks where indicated.

Boost control faultWe check the control components that apply to the fitted system.

Fault between turbo stagesThe readings help narrow down when the boost drops and which stage or control needs inspection.

Before pricing a turboThe quote should explain whether the tests point to an air leak, a control fault or mechanical turbo damage.

See BMW engine diagnostics.

Diesel emissions

Find why the DPF warning came on

A diesel particulate filter warning calls for checks of the pressure readings, operating conditions and related engine faults.

What you noticeWhat needs checkingWhat the result decides
DPF warning first appearsCompare differential pressure, sensor plausibility and relevant exhaust temperature data.Whether to inspect the sensor or hoses before deciding if the filter needs work.
Regeneration does not completeReview stored engine faults and the operating conditions the car requires.Whether a supporting fault needs attention before regeneration can be assessed.
Warning returns after previous workCheck the previous findings and how pressure readings changed after the work.Whether filter assessment, suitable regeneration or replacement should be quoted.

Tell us if the car has had previous filter, sensor or exhaust work. Bring the invoice or fault report if you have it.

Hard starting

Separate a slow crank from a fuel fault

Tell us whether it starts poorly when cold, after a hot stop or after sitting overnight. If the fault comes and goes, note whether the engine turns slowly or turns normally without firing.

See BMW injector diagnosis and replacement for more on injector testing.

RecordDescribe when it happensNote the temperature, time parked and whether the starter turns normally.
CompareCheck cranking speed and voltageWe test the battery and connections when cranking is slow.
ConfirmCheck fuel pressure or glow faultsWhen cranking is normal, we compare requested and actual rail pressure. Cold-only faults can also need glow-system checks.
VerifyRecheck the starting conditionsAfter the agreed work, we repeat the relevant checks where practical.

Fluid loss

Trace coolant and oil separately

  • Coolant level dropsInspect accessible joints and the reservoir. Pressure test where appropriate and check circulation if temperature rises.
  • Oil drips or a burning smellTrace the highest fresh oil mark. Oil can travel across the undertray before it reaches the ground.

See BMW coolant leak checks

Overheating warning? Stop safely, switch off and arrange assistance. Leave the coolant cap closed while the system is hot.

Six-speed automatic

Find when the shudder starts

  • During a gear changeRecord the gear, load and temperature and compare engine and transmission data.
  • At steady speedDescribe the speed and throttle position. Agree the tests needed before pricing a fluid service or repair.
  • Before fluid serviceConfirm the gearbox, specified fluid, pan or filter and any visible leaks.

E64 Convertible

Record where the soft top stops

Avoid repeatedly cycling a roof that binds or stops partway.

  • Stops halfwayCheck prerequisites, position signals and the fitted drive system.
  • Fails to latchCheck alignment and latch operation before choosing parts.
  • Wet trim or bootTrace the entry point and inspect affected seals, drainage and electrical connections as applicable.

Brakes and suspension

Describe when the vibration or knock appears

Brake pedal

Vibration when braking

Check the affected axle and measure pad and disc condition. Confirm the brake package and wear sensor before pricing parts.

Road surface

Knock over bumps or uneven wear

Inspect tyres and check joints, bushes and dampers as indicated. Confirm whether alignment is needed after repairs.

Scheduled maintenance

Choose the diesel service items due

We compare the service display with your records. Bring invoices if you have them, especially if you recently bought the car.

Oil and filterWe confirm the diesel oil approval and fill quantity for your engine.

Air filterWe use the service history and inspection to check whether it is due.

Diesel fuel filterWe check when it was last changed and match the replacement to the car.

Brake fluidWe check the fluid due date separately from pad and disc wear.

Tyres and brakesWe record measured wear and advise what needs attention.

Service recordsWe list completed items and explain any work you can plan for later.

BMW 635d repair questions

Can a DPF warning be quoted from the message alone?

The warning helps choose the first check. The repair quote depends on fault data and tests of the fitted system.

Does loss of power mean the twin turbos need replacement?

A charge-air leak or control fault can produce similar symptoms. Compare test results before choosing parts.

Can I book servicing and a fault check together?

Yes. Share the service reminder and symptom so each job can be scoped separately.

Can you collect a 635d in Dubai?

The workshop offers free Dubai pickup. Confirm availability. If the car is unsafe to drive, call to confirm recovery arrangements and any charge separately.
