Air springs and adaptive dampers do different jobs

Air springs support the vehicle and allow level control. Dampers control movement and can be conventional or electronically controlled. An electric compressor supplies the air system. The arrangement depends on generation, axle and factory options. Do not infer fitment from the X5 or 7 Series badge alone.

What level control can do

On equipped vehicles, level control compensates for loading within the vehicle limits. Adjustable ride heights and driving modes depend on the model and options. Air springs do not automatically mean every car has adjustable damping or driver selected ride heights.

What the symptoms can mean

  • A low corner after parking can involve an air spring, connection or valve leak.
  • Repeated compressor running can involve air loss, supply performance or a control issue.
  • A warning may require sensor, wiring and power supply checks.
  • A harsh ride can involve damping, tyres or loss of suspension travel.

Checks to leave to the workshop

The assessment can include chassis fault codes, physical ride height readings, leak checks, compressor supply and output, sensor operation and valve behaviour. A generic engine code reader may not access the relevant chassis modules.

Do not work beneath an unsupported vehicle or disconnect pressurised lines. Photograph the stance from outside while safely parked. If the car sits very low, rubs a tyre or handles unpredictably, stop safely and arrange suitable recovery.

Repair the confirmed fault

A wiring or connection fault may be repairable without replacing an air spring. A leaking bellows, failed compressor or defective valve requires its own supported repair or replacement decision. Check the system for air loss and supply faults before fitting a compressor, and address any confirmed leak as part of the work.

Replacement of one failed component does not automatically require replacing the entire system. Quantity and paired replacement follow the condition of related parts and applicable fitting guidance.

Compare the quote and final checks

A separate air spring is not a complete air strut. Ask for the component, side, quantity, manufacturer, part number, labour and VAT. Confirm whether leak checks, ride height calibration and alignment are required and included. Parts lead time and parked observation can affect completion.

Ask for the applicable warranty and exclusions in writing. After repair, the required checks should establish correct operation rather than merely clearing a warning.
