Model and generation

Find the right repair page for your 7 Series

The same badge can appear on more than one generation. Start with the model year and badge. We can use the VIN to confirm fitment when needed.

  1. E38 and earlier

    Older 7 Series models

Tell us about previous repairs and modifications so we can check parts availability and diagnostic access.

  2. E65 and E66

    Electrical and engine checks

Identify the badge and wheelbase before comparing starting, charging, oil loss or shift faults.

  3. F01 and F02

    Engine and drivetrain fitment

Confirm the engine and whether xDrive is fitted. Similar badges can have different parts and service requirements.

  4. G11 and G12

    Chassis and powertrain options

Identify the fitted suspension, drivetrain and any plug-in hybrid equipment before ordering parts.

  5. G70

    Petrol, plug-in hybrid and i7

Tell us the full badge and model year. We use the VIN when we need to confirm the electrical or drivetrain configuration.

Symptom guide

What is your 7 Series doing

Open the symptom you noticed to see where testing starts.

Slow crank or several warnings

We compare battery condition and charging or power supply data with when the warnings appeared.

See the checks
One corner sits low after parking

We compare the parked ride height with level-control data and check the affected system.

See the checks
Delayed gear engagement or shudder

We find out whether the symptom follows a gear change, road speed, engine load or a tight turn.

See the checks
Coolant loss or rising temperature

We identify the affected circuit and trace the leak or operating fault before quoting parts.

See the checks
Vibration or a brake warning

We check the affected axle and separate brake vibration from wheel or tyre vibration.

See the checks
Charging warning on a plug-in hybrid or i7

Tell us whether the warning appeared while charging or driving. We confirm which diagnostic checks apply to your car.

Petrol, diesel, hybrid and electric

Book the right type of assessment

Tell us how the car is powered and what warning appeared. That helps us direct your enquiry to the right checks and confirm availability.

For model-specific information, see BMW i7 repair or BMW plug-in hybrid battery diagnosis.

Petrol or dieselWe identify the fitted engine and service items. Diesel engine and emissions warnings need their own checks.
48V mild hybrid where fittedWe distinguish the 12V supply from the 48V system when the fault data points to it.
Plug-in hybridTell us whether the symptom involves the engine, charging or electric driving.
Fully electric i7For a charging or high-voltage warning, share the exact message so we can confirm the appropriate assessment.

Battery and electrical diagnosis

Which electrical system reported the warning

The first test depends on whether the car cranks slowly, goes flat after parking or shows warnings while running.

Technician testing BMW charging voltage with a battery tester clamped to the battery terminals in the boot
Example of BMW battery and charging tests
Slow crank or no start
We start with the 12V battery, connections and starting circuit where appropriate.
Battery repeatedly goes flat overnight
We check whether the battery holds charge and whether anything keeps drawing power after the car is parked.
Several warnings at once
We review the fault history and which warnings return after the supply is checked. A fitted 48V system or high-voltage system requires a separate assessment.

See BMW 12V battery testing and replacement.

Ride height and road feel

Find what changed in the ride

The first check depends on whether a corner drops while parked, the ride changes on the road, or vibration occurs under braking.

One corner sits lowWe compare parked height, fitted suspension and level-control data.
Ride feels harsh or unsettledWe inspect tyres and check damping or chassis faults as indicated.
Knock over bumpsWe check the affected side for play and inspect the joints, bushes and mounts involved.

See BMW suspension diagnosis and repair.

Transmission and driveline

When does the shudder or delay happen

Note whether it happens when selecting a gear, under load or while turning. Mention recent tyre or gearbox work.

Automatic transmission oil pan with integrated filter and bolts on a workshop bench
BMW automatic transmission pan and filter example
Delay selecting drive or reverse
We check the fault record and compare the behaviour cold and warm where relevant.
Shudder when turning
On an xDrive car, we check the tyre fitment and wear across both axles before pricing driveline parts.
Fluid service or repair
We identify the gearbox and explain whether the findings point to scheduled service, leak repair or further testing.

See BMW gearbox diagnosis and repair.

Cooling and engine warnings

Find the cause of coolant loss

Tell us whether the level drops while parked, after a trip or under load. We identify the affected circuit and use the findings to price the repair.

Low coolant or visible residue
We inspect the relevant connections and pressure-test where appropriate.
Temperature rises under load
We compare the warning and the operating conditions with the relevant cooling checks.
What the quote covers
Ask which part or circuit failed and whether seals, coolant and a final leak check are included.

Brake condition

What your brake inspection should show

What you noticeWhat we checkWhat it helps decide
Vibration during brakingMeasure pads and discs at the affected axle.Whether the work involves pads, discs or further testing.
Brake wear warningCheck actual pad wear, the sensor and brake fitment.Which parts to include in the fitted quote.

Scheduled maintenance

Plan service around the car you own

We compare the service display with your records and match the work to the fitted powertrain.

Oil and filterFor combustion engines, we match the oil approval and quantity to the fitted engine.

Filters and plugsWe check the service history and confirm which petrol or diesel items apply.

Brake fluidWe check the due date separately from pad and disc condition.

TyresWe record uneven wear and check approved fitment, especially where xDrive is fitted.

Cooling and battery conditionWe check these separately when a warning, leak or starting issue has appeared.

Service historyBring invoices if you have them so we can separate work already done from items still due.

Before booking

BMW 7 Series repair questions

Can I book maintenance and a warning check together?

Yes. Tell us what service is due and what the warning says so we can allow time for both.

Why does the workshop ask for the model year?

The 7 Series uses different engines, electrical systems and chassis equipment across generations. The year and badge help identify the car, and the VIN helps confirm parts fitment when needed.

Do the starting prices apply to plug-in models or the i7?

We confirm which service applies before quoting. The fully electric i7 has no engine oil service. A plug-in hybrid can have separate combustion-engine and electric-system service needs.

Can you collect my 7 Series in Dubai?

Free Dubai pickup is available subject to scheduling. If the car is unsafe to drive, call to discuss recovery and any separate charge.
