Symptoms and first checks

What is your X6 doing

Choose a symptom to see what to report and where the checks start.

Choose a symptom

First check

Coolant level drops

Note the frequency of top-ups and any dried residue or puddle. We trace the leak to the circuit before quoting.

See cooling checks

First check

Oil spots or burning smell

Tell us when you notice it and mention any recent gasket work. We look for the highest point with fresh oil.

See oil leak checks

First check

Knock or uneven ride height

Note which corner is affected and whether it happens after parking or over bumps. We check the fitted suspension setup.

See suspension checks

First check

Tail light warning

Tell us which side and function are affected. We check the lamp and circuit before quoting parts.

See rear-light checks

First check

Slow start or several warnings

Note whether the warnings appear at startup or while driving. Ask for the results of the battery and supply checks.

See battery and charging checks

First check

Steering shake when braking

Tell us if you feel it in the pedal, steering wheel or both. We use that to plan the brake, wheel and steering checks.

Fitment by generation

Which X6 do you drive

Share the model year and badge. We use the VIN to confirm parts fitment when needed.

E71

First generation

Bring any recent service or repair records, especially for repeat warnings or leaks.

F16

Second generation

Confirm optional suspension and brake equipment before ordering parts.

G06

Third generation

The xDrive40i, M50i and M60i differ by year and market. Some G06 models also use a 48-volt system. Confirm equipment by VIN before ordering parts.

X6 M

BMW M models

Share the year and whether it’s an X6 M Competition. The fitted brake and suspension package determines the parts and measurements needed.

Cooling and engine oil

Find the source of a leak on your X6

We trace the fluid back to its source before quoting repairs.

Coolant loss between visits

Share how often you top up and whether you see a puddle or dried residue.

We inspect the reservoir, hoses and joints. A pressure test can help locate the leak. Ask if the quote covers refilling and retesting.

Engine oil

Oil spots or a smell after parking

Tell us when you see spots or smell oil and mention any recent gasket work.

Oil can travel along the undertray. We trace fresh oil above the drip and may clean and recheck the area if there’s old residue.

Suspension and brakes

Work out when the knock or shake starts

When the symptom appears helps us choose the first check.

One corner sits lower after parking
Note which corner drops and how long the car was parked. On air suspension models, we check for leaks and test system operation.
Knock over bumps or during turns
Mention recent tyre or suspension work. We inspect tyres, joints and dampers on the affected side.
Shake mainly when braking
Tell us if the shake reaches the pedal or steering wheel. We measure pads and discs and confirm which sensors or hardware are needed.

xDrive and transmission

Find when the shudder starts

A shudder in a car park, a vibration at road speed and a jolt during a shift can need different checks. Share when it happens and any recent tyre work.

Tight turns or pulling away

Start here
Check tyre sizes, pressures and wear on all four wheels. If front and rear sizes differ, confirm each size is on the correct axle.
Next decision
When tyre fitment is correct, the workshop can follow the applicable xDrive and transfer-case test plan.

Vibration at steady speed

Start here
Note the speed range and whether the steering wheel or seat shakes. Mention recent wheel work or an impact.
Next decision
Tyre, wheel or driveline checks can be prioritised based on where and when the vibration is reproduced.

Jolt during a gear change

Start here
Report the gear, speed and whether the gearbox was cold or warm. Compare the shift with stored faults and relevant readings.
Next decision
Use the confirmed gearbox or driveline findings to agree further testing, fluid work or mechanical repair.

BMW’s guidance for applicable G06 and F96 vehicles starts with a tyre inspection before transfer-case diagnosis. Read BMW’s service bulletin.

Rear lighting

Find what failed before replacing the tail light

Share the dashboard message, the affected side and whether it’s the running light, brake light or indicator. A short video helps if the fault comes and goes.

Check the circuit
Ask whether the connector, wiring and power supply were checked, especially if more than one function fails.
Identify the fitted lamp
Confirm the lamp section and VIN before pricing parts. Ask whether the quote is for a circuit repair or a replacement assembly.

Scheduled service

Book what is due on your X6

Bring the service reminder or latest invoice if you have it.

  • Oil and filterConfirm the approved oil, fill quantity, filter and reminder reset.
  • Brake itemsCheck the brake fluid due date and pad and disc wear on both axles.
  • Filters and ignitionUse service records to check when filters and petrol-engine spark plugs are due.
  • Transmission and xDrive fluidsAsk which unit, fluid and filter or pan are included. If there’s a shudder, start with diagnosis.

Parts and labour

What to look for in your X6 quote

Compare the inspection findings and complete fitted price before approving the work.

Before you approve

  • Cooling leak Which part leaked? Does the quote include refill and retest?
  • Ride height fault Which component failed? Does the price cover one side or both?
  • Tail light fault Which lamp section is affected? Is the quote for wiring or the lamp?

When you collect the car

Match the invoice to the estimate and ask which checks confirmed the repair.

Ask what to monitor, which items can wait and when they need attention.

Pre-purchase inspection

Check a used X6 before you commit

Ask the seller for the VIN and service records. Agree a cold start, lift inspection and road test where practical.

  1. 01

    Check the records

Confirm the engine and equipment, then look for invoices for cooling, suspension and drivetrain work.

  2. 02

    Inspect and drive

Compare tyre fitment on both axles, check ride height after parking and describe any shudder or brake vibration during the drive.

  3. 03

    Get findings in writing

Separate immediate repairs from routine servicing and agree which items need more testing before pricing.

BMW X6 repair FAQs

Can I book a service and a fault check together

Yes. Mention both when you contact us. We can discuss the scheduled work and the diagnostic scope separately so you know what each part of the visit covers.

Can you quote from the year and mileage alone

They help with an initial estimate. A fitted quote may also need the VIN or an inspection, especially when several brake or suspension packages were available.

Does a tight-turn shudder mean I need a transfer case

Tyre sizes, wear and pressures are useful first checks. The workshop can compare those findings with the road test and fault data before quoting transfer case work.

What should I ask for with the estimate

Ask what was found, which parts and labour are included, the fitted total, and when parts are available. Ask what will be checked again after the repair.
