Trace coolant loss before replacing parts
- Level drops with no puddle
- Check the tank, hoses and radiator connections. A pressure test can reveal a leak that reaches the undertray or dries before you see it.
- Temperature rises or the warning returns
- Identify the fitted engine and cooling circuit. Check pump, thermostat and fan operation as indicated.
- Before you approve the quote
- Ask what leaked and whether the estimate includes coolant, bleeding and a final leak check. If the car was driven while overheating, ask whether the estimate includes a separate check for related damage. - Describe when it happens
Tell us if it occurs when selecting drive, changing gear, braking or turning tightly at low speed.
- Confirm the fitted hardware
Identify the gearbox and check fault data, leaks and mounts as indicated. On xDrive, tyre fitment and the transfer case may need separate checks.
- Agree the fitted repair
Confirm the scope before choosing a fluid service or approving parts. If the proposal is a fluid service, ask for the fitted gearbox, fluid specification, filter or pan requirements and the final level check. If it is a repair, ask which test or observation identifies the failed component. If the shake happens while braking, have the brakes, tyres and suspension checked.

Send the exact wording and describe any recent battery or electrical work. On an equipped 540i, ask which system raised the fault and what the diagnostic quote covers. A routine 12-volt battery quote does not cover diagnosis of the 48-volt system.

Share mileage, service display and invoices. Check the oil approval, filters, plugs and brake fluid against the fitted engine and recorded work.
Approve the work in writing
Ask for the finding, parts option, labour and final checks. Agree how extra work will be approved.
Keep the handover record
Request the applicable service reset, road test or leak recheck on the invoice. Record anything that should be monitored.

BMW 540i repair questions
Is every BMW 540i a six-cylinder
No. The E39 used a V8. Later G30 and G60 540i applications use turbo inline-six engines. Share the VIN to confirm parts and equipment.
Can I book a service and fault check together
Yes. Mention both so the workshop can agree the scheduled service items and diagnostic charges separately.
Will a gearbox service fix shudder
It depends on the cause. Gearbox, mounts, tyres and xDrive components can produce different symptoms. Ask for the findings before approving fluid service or parts.
