Planning a component repair

General BMW market budgets, reviewed on 2 November 2026. These are not fixed Active Tourer offers.

Mechanical main water pump

AED 1,200 to 3,000Replacement work

Confirm the identified pump, seals, coolant, fitting and final checks. Thermostats and overheating damage are separate.

Conventional shock absorbers

AED 1,200 to 2,500Per axle pair

Check the axle and damper type. Mounts, hardware and alignment affect the fitted total; adaptive equipment needs its own quote.

Valve-cover gasket repair

AED 1,200 to 2,000Gasket-level work

A gasket repair differs from replacing a damaged complete cover. The engine and confirmed leak source determine the work.

Gearbox, clutch, internal engine work and hybrid-specific repairs need a quotation for the actual unit and findings. Extra damage, machining, programming and recovery must be identified when needed. Market ranges are budgeting guidance rather than guaranteed fitted prices.

Your version changes the work

Identify your Active Tourer

Select a generation for the fitment details that matter. The full model year is more useful than the 2 Series badge alone.

F45First generationPetrol diesel and 225xe variants

Earlier cars need their original specification and service history checked alongside current condition. Facelifts and market differences can change the parts fitted.

  • EngineMatch the engine before choosing oil, filters, ignition parts or cooling components.
  • GearboxManual, conventional automatic and dual-clutch applications require different service and repair procedures.
  • 225xeThe petrol engine and electric drive introduce separate maintenance and diagnostic requirements.
U06Second generationIntroduced for 2022

A redesigned cabin, updated transmissions and electrified powertrains make identification essential before electrical or drivetrain work.

  • TransmissionSeven-speed dual-clutch applications must not receive an unrelated conventional automatic package.
  • ElectrificationSome versions use 48-volt systems. The 225e and 230e plug-in hybrids have additional electric-drive equipment.
  • EquipmentConfirm the fitted display, driver-assistance equipment and any required calibration or setup.

Not a Coupe or Gran Coupe

The Active Tourer is a compact MPV with its own body and powertrain applications. The Gran Tourer is also a different body variant. Use the wider 2 Series page for other body styles.

Model year and symptoms are enough to start. The VIN may be needed before parts are ordered. BMW describes the second-generation powertrains; availability varies by market and production date.

Choose what you notice

What brings your car in

Pick the closest symptom to see a focused assessment. The answer changes with your choice; the symptom is not a confirmed diagnosis.

Choose an Active Tourer symptom

Fault codes guide the investigation alongside the relevant physical tests

Rough running or reduced power

Tell us whether it happens from cold, at idle or under acceleration. The displayed message and fault history help choose the next tests.

  • Read engine and related module faults
  • Check live data and targeted ignition, air or fuel conditions
  • Use mechanical tests when the findings justify them

Coolant level drops or temperature rises

A leak, poor circulation, a temperature-control fault and a cabin AC problem need different investigations. A water-pump replacement is not the first answer to every coolant warning.

  • Trace visible coolant to its source
  • Check the relevant pump, temperature control and airflow
  • Assess possible overheating damage separately

Judder or a delay into drive

Describe when the car hesitates and whether the engine speed changes. Engine running, mounts, clutch control and internal gearbox faults can feel similar.

  • Identify the fitted transmission
  • Inspect leaks and review gearbox control data
  • Agree safe road checks and any further testing

Noise over bumps or vibration when braking

Wheel, tyre, brake and suspension faults need their own measurements. A firm ride alone does not establish a failed damper.

  • Inspect tyre condition and wheel movement
  • Measure brakes and check caliper operation where relevant
  • Locate worn joints, bushes or mounts before quoting

Slow cranking or no start

Say whether the engine turns, clicks or stays silent. A warning about battery discharge does not by itself prove the battery needs replacement.

  • Assess battery charge and condition
  • Check supply and the starting or charging circuit
  • Investigate repeated discharge as separate work

When to stop driving For overheating, an oil-pressure warning, smoke, severe shaking, major power loss or compromised braking, stop safely and seek assistance. Do not open a hot coolant cap or restart to test an oil-pressure fault.

Repairs for the complete car

Describe window, mirror, lighting, trim or tailgate faults when enquiring so the available work can be confirmed. Cabin AC cooling and engine coolant circulation remain separate jobs.

Pressure testing helps distinguish a leak from a circulation or control fault

Coolant loss and overheating

Find the leak before replacing parts

A puddle under the engine can come from above or travel along the undertray. Establish where it starts and which cooling circuit is affected.

01

Locate the source

Inspect accessible hoses, tank, radiator joints and pump areas. Appropriate pressure testing can help reproduce a leak that is not obvious when the engine is cold.

02

Check temperature control

Assess the fitted pump arrangement, relevant operating data, thermostat or heat-management equipment and cooling airflow. A stored code alone does not prove a failed pump.

03

Repair and verify

The quote identifies the failed components, specified coolant and required filling or bleeding. Recheck for leaks and operation after the work; overheating damage needs its own assessment.

See pump repair and replacement choices. An auxiliary or hybrid-circuit pump is not priced as a conventional engine main pump.

A different unit needs a different repair

Gear changes need more than an oil change

Service, clutch work, control repair and a replacement gearbox are different decisions. Choose the fitted type below or ask us to identify it.

Manual gearbox and clutch

Separate difficult selection from clutch slip, release-system problems or mount vibration. Inspection should establish what is worn before a clutch kit, flywheel or complete gearbox is recommended.

Ask which associated parts are required, whether removal and refitting are included, and how the finished work will be checked.

Conventional automatic

For applicable F45 versions, identify the actual unit and its specified fluid, filter or pan arrangement. A service addresses due fluid work, not every cause of harsh shifting or delayed engagement.

Control, hydraulic or internal repair follows the findings. Compare the repair with rebuilding or replacement only after the failed components and replacement-unit condition are established.

Dual-clutch transmission

Applicable F45 and U06 transmissions need their correct clutch, fluid and control procedures. A conventional automatic package cannot be assumed suitable.

Confirm the proposed clutch or control repair, seals and fluid, removal and fitting, and required adaptation or programming. Ask for the exact fitted total and the expected completion time.

Active Tourer-specific gearbox and clutch prices require assessment. The gearbox service page explains the broader choices; its general budgets do not establish a fixed price for your transmission.

Maintenance without unnecessary extras

Build the service around what is due

Start with Condition Based Service, the applicable maintenance requirements and your last invoices. Oil, brake fluid and wear items can become due at different times.

Oil and the correct filters

Confirm the BMW oil approval, quantity and oil filter for the engine. Engine-air and cabin filters have different jobs and should be identified on the estimate. A service reset follows completed work; it does not fix a warning.

Petrol and diesel service differences

Spark plugs belong to petrol-engine maintenance. Diesel fuel-filter and emissions-system work follow their own requirements. Avoid a generic package that includes irrelevant parts or omits due engine-specific work.

Brakes tyres and time-based items

Assess pads, discs, tyres and brake fluid against the applicable requirements and condition. Tyre rotation depends on size and direction. Alignment is based on measurements and the repair performed, not automatically due at every oil change.

An incomplete service record

Bring whatever records you have. Compare the service display with a condition inspection and agree the urgent items first. Missing history does not mean every fluid or component must be replaced together.

Send the service display and mileage to discuss BMW service options. Share the last invoice and mention oil or coolant top-ups, recent work and changes in how the car runs.

Describe the sound and the warning

A starting fault is not always the battery

Tell us what happens when you try to start. The same dashboard message can accompany different electrical or engine faults.

The engine turns slowly

Charge and battery-condition tests come first, with the relevant connections and starting circuit checked when needed.

A click or no response

Note dashboard changes and whether the fault is intermittent. Power supply, starter control and other causes need to be separated.

Turns normally but will not start

This needs an engine-start investigation rather than an assumed battery replacement. Share any warning or previous repair.

A battery that goes flat again

Repeated discharge after parking can require a separate current-drain investigation once the vehicle reaches its resting state. Tell us about accessories, jump starts, long parking periods and recent battery work. Agree the diagnostic time and charge.

Replacement must match the required low-voltage technology, capacity and fitment, with registration or configuration where the vehicle procedure calls for it. A larger battery is not a universal upgrade.

Plug-in hybrid or 48-volt warnings

An ordinary 12-volt replacement does not include the high-voltage traction battery or every 48-volt component. A 225xe, 225e or 230e can still require petrol-engine servicing while also having separate electric-drive and charging faults.

Send the exact message. High-voltage battery opening, charging-unit replacement and specialist electric-drive work require the procedure, equipment and technician capability confirmed for your car before booking. Manufacturer warranty or recall cases belong with the authorised network.

A better comparison than parts price alone

Know what the repair quote buys

A gasket, complete housing and replacement assembly can solve different faults. The lowest parts figure is not necessarily the lowest fitted total.

Genuine BMW

BMW-branded replacements matched to the vehicle. Your estimate identifies the parts supplied, fitting work and applicable written repair terms.

Suitable OEM option

A suitable alternative from an original-equipment supplier, where available. Compare the named manufacturer, specification and fitted warranty.

For major engine or gearbox damage, discuss targeted repair, rebuilding and a replacement unit only when the findings justify those options. A used unit needs its condition, compatibility and fitted warranty stated.

Keep the diagnostic findings and invoice. Ask for the applicable duration or mileage limit, parts and labour coverage, exclusions and claim process in writing.

Buying a used Active Tourer

Check the car before committing

Agree the inspection scope and report first. An attractive cabin or a clear dashboard does not establish the condition of the whole vehicle.

Especially useful with missing history

For an imported or older car, the specification and records affect both compatibility and the near-term repair budget. An inspection should separate urgent faults, maintenance needs and items requiring deeper diagnosis.

  1. History and identity

Match the vehicle details, available service records, displayed due items and declared modifications.

  2. Engine and cooling

Assess starting, running and accessible leaks. Record tests that could not be completed or need a separate appointment.

  3. Transmission and road behaviour

Check agreed shifting, steering, braking and ride behaviour when a road test is safe and permitted.

  4. Wear and body condition

Inspect accessible brakes, tyres, suspension and underbody areas. Panel or water-ingress concerns need appropriate investigation.

  5. Cabin and electrical equipment

Include agreed AC, windows, mirrors, lights, tailgate and display functions. Confirm the exact fitted equipment.

  6. Hybrid and charging limits

For a plug-in version, specify the electric-drive and charging checks included. A general scan does not guarantee battery health or reveal every hidden fault.

Our BMW inspection service provides the appropriate enquiry route. An agreed inspection records findings within its scope; it cannot guarantee discovery of every intermittent or concealed fault.

Clear decisions at each stage

From your first call to collection

  1. 01

    Describe the problem

Share the year, mileage, symptoms and area. A warning photo or an existing recording can help.

  2. 02

    Agree the assessment

Confirm the checks, diagnostic charge and expected time. Discuss safe collection if the car cannot be driven.

  3. 03

    Approve the work

Review findings, parts choice, fitted total and expected completion. Additional work needs further approval.

  4. 04

    Review the result

Check completed work, relevant tests, remaining advisories and written repair terms before handover.

How much will my Active Tourer repair cost

Routine servicing has advertised starting prices, while repairs depend on the fault and fitted parts. Ask for the assessment charge and one written VAT-inclusive fitted total before approval. The repair budgets above are general market guidance, not fixed model-specific offers.

Can you service a 225xe 225e or 230e

Confirm the work for your exact version. Petrol-engine maintenance is separate from high-voltage battery, charging and electric-drive repair. Specialist work requires the procedure, equipment and technician capability checked before booking.

Does the drivetrain message mean a failed gearbox

No. It can concern different powertrain systems. Fault data and the relevant physical tests establish the next step. Follow the displayed instructions; severe shaking, smoke, overheating or major power loss needs safe stopping and assistance.

How long does the work take

An oil service, an intermittent fault investigation and an internal gearbox repair need different appointment times. Ask for the assessment time first. The repair quote should give an expected completion date based on the findings and parts availability.

Do you need the VIN before I can enquire

No. Begin with the model year and what the car is doing. We may request the VIN for precise engine, gearbox or part identification before ordering. Do not remove trim or disconnect equipment just to send enquiry photographs.

Should I use the dealer for a warranty or recall

Manufacturer warranty claims, recalls and service-package entitlement should be checked with the authorised BMW network. We are an independent workshop. Tell us about any existing cover before agreeing independent work.
