Find the right check

Start with the symptom

Open a symptom to see where testing starts.

Oil smoke, smell or drips

We check whether oil is leaking outside the engine or being consumed. Tell us when smoke appears and how often the oil needs topping up.

See the checks
Coolant warning or falling level

We identify the cooling circuit and check where the loss starts before pricing parts.

See the checks
Reduced power or misfire

We use the fault record to decide between ignition, fuel, intake and, on twin-turbo cars, boost checks.

See the checks
Shift delay or shudder

Tell us whether it happens when selecting a gear, turning or travelling at a steady speed. Those conditions point to different tests.

See the checks
Roof, glass or rear light fault

Tell us which function failed and whether it followed rain, battery work or a repair to the affected area.

Model fitment

Which BMW 650i do you drive

The two generations use different V8s. Tell us the model year and body style. We use the VIN when parts fitment needs confirming.

E63 Coupé and E64 Convertible

4.8-litre naturally aspirated V8

Cooling, ignition and oil loss checks depend on the engine and fitted parts. Tell us if any engine or gearbox work has already been done.

F06 Gran Coupé, F12 Convertible and F13 Coupé

4.4-litre twin-turbo V8

We identify the engine revision, cooling circuits and whether xDrive is fitted before quoting work.

See BMW’s specifications for the earlier V8 and later 6 Series.

Oil loss and exhaust smoke

Trace oil loss before ordering parts

Fresh drips and smoke from the exhaust call for different checks. A record of top-ups and when the smoke appears can help.

Outside the engine

Oil smell or drips

We trace fresh oil around covers, housings and the underside. The undertray can carry oil away from its source.

At the exhaust

Smoke or repeated top-ups

Tell us whether smoke follows startup, idling or acceleration. We check external leaks and ventilation before recommending further tests, which may include turbo or internal checks depending on the engine.

Find the source of coolant loss

Pressure tester connected to a BMW cooling system
Cooling system pressure test
  1. Look for external leaks

Inspect the reservoir, hose joints, radiator and accessible connections.

  2. Test the affected circuit

Pressure-test as appropriate. If circulation is suspected, check pump, thermostat and fan operation for the fitted engine. Turbocharged versions can have more than one cooling circuit.

  3. Confirm the fitted work

Ask which circuit is affected and whether seals, coolant, bleeding and the final leak check are included. See BMW water pump repair.

Overheating warning Stop safely, switch off and arrange recovery. Keep the coolant cap closed while hot.

Match the power loss checks to the engine

Naturally aspirated V8

Start with the misfire record, ignition condition, live readings and intake or ventilation checks. Persistent faults may need fuel or mechanical tests.

Twin-turbo V8

For reduced power under load, compare requested and actual boost and inspect charge-air connections. Check ignition and fuel data before quoting turbo work.

What to report

Send the exact message and whether it appeared cold, hot or on acceleration. If the warning clears after restarting, note when it returns and any recent plug, coil or intake work.

Separate a shift fault from a road-speed vibration

Delay selecting drive or a harsh shift
Confirm the gearbox and when it happens. Check stored faults, leaks and mounts as indicated. If the concern only appears after a longer drive, note the approximate duration and speed. For a fluid service, confirm the fitted gearbox, specified fluid, filter or pan and the final level check.
Shudder while turning
On xDrive models, tyre fitment and transfer case operation may need separate checks.
Vibration only while braking
Check brakes, tyres, hubs and suspension before treating it as a transmission fault.

See BMW gearbox repair for related checks.

Check body and cabin faults by system

Rear lights
Tell us which function failed and whether there is condensation or an intermittent warning. Inspect the lamp, connector and supply before pricing an assembly. BMW tail light replacement.
Convertible roof and frameless glass
Describe whether the roof stops moving, the window fails to drop or water enters after rain. Check the fitted system and reproduce the symptom before approving parts.
Windscreen and cabin electronics
Share the damage location or the exact display fault. For glass, confirm the fitted sensors and whether calibration applies. For iDrive, note whether the display goes blank or keeps restarting. See BMW windscreen replacement for glass fitment.

Plan maintenance from the car’s records

  1. Match the fluids and parts

Bring the service display and invoices. Confirm engine oil approval and filter by VIN. Check plug and filter history before agreeing scheduled work. If the records are incomplete, ask for a baseline inspection and separate urgent repairs from maintenance due and items to monitor. Have the completed items recorded on the invoice.

  2. Separate wear and starting faults

Ask for measured brake and tyre findings. If the car repeatedly needs a jump, check battery condition, charging and parked current draw as indicated. Confirm fitment and registration before BMW battery replacement.

  3. Review the fitted estimate

Check the diagnosed part, labour, consumables and timing. Ask how the workshop will request approval for extras. At collection, request the invoice and applicable reset, leak check or road test.

Compare repair options before approving parts

Oil leak or smoke
Ask where fresh oil was found and which checks support the repair. Compare a seal-only job with the full assembly only when the condition of the housing is known. If the car smokes but the leak inspection is inconclusive, confirm the next diagnostic step separately.
Boost or misfire warning
Ask which cylinder or system showed a fault and under what conditions. A charge-air connection, ignition fault and a turbo fault have different fitted scopes. Confirm which final readings or road checks will be recorded.
Driveline shudder
Tell the workshop about recent tyres or gearbox work and whether the shudder occurs in a tight turn or during a gear change. Ask how the proposed repair addresses the observed fault and whether fluid, hardware and final checks are included.

BMW 650i repair questions

Is every BMW 650i turbocharged

No. Earlier E63 and E64 cars use a naturally aspirated V8. The later F06, F12 and F13 650i use a twin-turbo V8. Confirm the fitted version by VIN.

Can a photo identify a coolant leak

A photo can help plan the inspection. Testing is needed to identify the source, access requirements and fitted price.

Will a fluid change fix a shift delay

The correct work depends on the diagnosed cause. Check for leaks, faults and mount or driveline issues before agreeing a fluid service.
