Remote entry and start recognition

BMW Key Fob Repair in Dubai

If your BMW remote only works up close, a button sticks or the car says key not detected, our Al Quoz workshop can check the fob and how the car responds. We handle key batteries, worn buttons and damaged cases, and assess whether an electronic fault needs repair or replacement.

Repair options and cost

BMW key fob repair cost in Dubai

A loose battery price is not the fitted repair cost. Your quote depends on the key design, confirmed fault and whether vehicle testing or a replacement key is needed. Send a key photo and model details for an initial assessment.

Battery fittingCorrect cell first

Identify the battery, inspect accessible contacts and check operation. A sealed rechargeable cell requires a different assessment from a replaceable coin cell.

Buttons and casingRetain working parts

Check whether a pad, switch or compatible housing is sufficient. The quote should identify which original electronics and blade are retained.

Board or moisture damageAssess repairability

Agree inspection charges and any case-opening consequences. Repair depends on corrosion, component damage and parts availability.

Replacement keyConfirm eligibility

Specify the key source, compatibility, setup, blade work where needed and vehicle testing. Replacement is a separate quote from battery fitting.

A fixed tariff for these key repairs is not published here. Confirm the assessment fee, whether it is credited against an approved repair, parts, labour, any programming, transport before booking. The written repair total should be agreed before work proceeds.

Which BMW Key Do You Have?

BMW has used several key designs, and they do not all take the same battery. Some have a coin cell you can change, others have a rechargeable cell that charges while the car is running. Find yours below before buying anything.

Match the cell code and polarity to your existing battery and vehicle handbook. Key appearance and chassis family alone do not establish fitment. If unsure, send a photo before opening the key. Fitting the wrong cell, or prying open a rechargeable key looking for a coin cell, can damage the case and the board.

The key style also tells us how much work a repair might need. A coin cell key is usually a quick battery change unless a button or the board has failed. A rechargeable key that no longer holds charge needs its cell, charging function and board assessed before a repair is agreed. A display key or a phone key has its own checks, which we cover further down this page.

Do it yourself

Changing a BMW Key Battery at Home

For a key with a user-accessible battery cover, follow the procedure in your BMW handbook and match the exact cell specification. The steps below are an overview, not a universal opening method. Sealed rechargeable and display keys require different handling.

Use a correctly specified battery from a reliable supplier. If the fault remains, check polarity, cell condition, contacts and cover seating before assuming the key needs replacement. Interference and vehicle-side faults can also prevent detection.

Do not force a rechargeable key open looking for a coin cell. These cases are usually sealed, and prying them open can crack the case and damage the board.

  1. Remove the bladeSlide the release and pull out the metal emergency blade, if your key has one.

  2. Open the coverFollow the handbook for the cover and tool specified for your key. Do not force the housing.

  3. Note the directionCheck which way the old battery faces before you take it out.

  4. Fit the new cellInsert the new battery the same way, without touching the flat faces too much.

  5. Close and testClip the cover back, refit the blade and test lock, unlock and the boot button near the car.

Signs of a weak key

Signs Your BMW Key Battery Is Running Low

Reduced remote range, intermittent buttons or a battery warning can justify a key check. These symptoms do not prove that the battery is the only fault.

Compare both keys in the same conditions, away from phones and other possible interference. One affected key makes a key-side fault more likely; both affected keys also justify checking the vehicle battery, receiver, aerials and access system.

  • Key battery messageA Check Control message asks you to replace or charge the key battery.

  • Short rangeThe car only locks or unlocks when you stand right next to it.

  • Buttons need several pressesLock, unlock or boot buttons work some of the time.

  • Key not detectedThe car will not start with the start button until the key is placed in a set spot.

  • Comfort Access stops workingTouching the handle no longer unlocks the door.

When the buttons still work

BMW Comfort Access faults at the door

On equipped models, try the same working remote at more than one door. Note whether the car misses a handle touch, fails to unlock on approach or unlocks without opening a particular door.

Comfort Access symptoms and diagnostic checks
What still worksWhat to checkWhat the result tells us
Another handle still unlocks the carThe affected handle sensor and its wiring, where fitted.A fault isolated to one handle helps narrow the inspection to that door.
Touch unlock works, approach unlock does notWhether approach unlocking is supported and enabled in the vehicle settings. The car may still read the key at the handle even when automatic approach unlocking is inactive.
The remote unlocks other doors, but one stays lockedWhether that door also fails using the interior central locking switch.A failure on both commands directs attention to the door lock or its circuit.

Flat key, car still starts

How to Start a BMW With a Dead Key

Many BMWs have an emergency key-detection procedure that can work when the remote battery is flat. The method depends on the vehicle and requires a valid recognised key and sufficient vehicle battery power.

1Unlock with the bladeMost keys hide a metal blade. Use it in the door lock, which may sit under a small cover on the handle.
2Find the marked spotOn many models there is a key symbol on the steering column or a marked area in the centre console.
3Hold the key therePlace the key against the marked spot, with your foot on the brake.
4Press startIf the key is recognised, follow the displayed start instructions. Arrange battery replacement or key testing afterwards.

The exact spot differs by model, so check the owner handbook for your car. If the car still will not start this way, the key chip, the car battery or the immobiliser may be at fault, and that needs testing.

More than a battery

BMW Key Faults We Repair

When a correctly fitted battery does not restore operation, testing determines whether the fault is in the key or vehicle. Before a sealed case is opened, agree the inspection method, possible case replacement and repair limits. Retaining serviceable original electronics can avoid a complete replacement key.

We also check the car side. A key can be perfectly healthy while the car fails to hear it, for example when the car battery is weak or a receiver aerial has a fault. Testing both avoids paying for a key that was never the problem.

Worn buttonsThe rubber pad or the switch under it wears out, so a button stops responding.
Cracked or broken caseA compatible case can retain working electronics and the transponder. Existing electrical damage still needs diagnosis.
Battery contactsBent or corroded contacts stop a new battery from making connection.
Board faultsA cracked solder joint or failed part stops the remote from transmitting.
Water damageThe key is dried and cleaned, then tested. Some keys recover, others need replacing.
Rechargeable cellSome older sealed keys may suit a specialist cell repair after checking the board and case condition.

Dubai conditions

Protect your key from heat and moisture

Avoid leaving keys on a sunlit dashboard or inside a hot parked car. Follow the battery and vehicle manufacturer’s storage guidance, and keep the key dry.

A cracked housing can expose the buttons and electronics to contamination. Check your spare periodically and keep it in a secure, dry place away from the vehicle.

Lost or extra keys

Spare and Replacement BMW Keys in Dubai

A key battery is a quick fix. A lost key is a different job, because a new key has to be programmed to the car, and how that works depends on how many keys you still have.

You still have one key

Adding a spare key

With a working key in hand, a new key can be added to the car. It is a good time to do it, before the last key is lost or fails.

  • We read the car to see which key system it uses.
  • A matching new key is sourced for your car.
  • The key is programmed and every function is tested.
  • Lost keys can be disabled so they no longer start the car.

See our key programming page for more detail.

All keys lost

Starting again with no key

With no working key, the available replacement route depends on the vehicle’s access system and key availability. Confirm eligibility, ownership requirements and transport before arranging work. An authorised BMW Centre is another route for ordering a replacement key.

  • Proof of ownership is needed before any key work.
  • The car may need to be collected, which we can arrange.
  • Module removal or replacement is not assumed merely because all keys are lost.
  • CAS, FEM and BDC systems require vehicle-specific assessment.

If the key module itself has failed, see CAS module replacement.

Before placing an order

Buying a BMW key online

A listing may be for a case, an uncut blade or a complete remote. A case is useful when your original electronics still work and can be transferred. If you need a second working key, ask what the seller actually supplies before paying.

Send us the listing and your model year. We can check what information is missing and whether we can work with the part before you order.

Check the part and market
Ask for the full part number and the radio frequency where applicable. Have compatibility checked against your VIN, especially for imported cars.
Ask whether it was previously paired
Confirm if the electronics are new or from another vehicle. A used remote may be unsuitable for the car’s access system.
Check blade cutting and returns
Find out whether a blank is included, who can cut it and whether the seller accepts returns after cutting or attempted setup.

Display key and phone key

Display Keys and BMW Digital Key Problems

Newer BMWs can come with a display key that has a small touch screen, or let you use your phone as the key. These have their own faults, and a coin cell is not the fix.

Display key flatUse the charging method specified for your display key and vehicle equipment. A non-charging key needs checks of the supply, charging components and battery.
Screen deadA display that stays black after charging needs testing to see if the screen or the board has failed.
Phone key lostCheck vehicle, market and phone compatibility, BMW ID and wallet setup. Digital Key uses NFC; Digital Key Plus adds supported hands-free functionality. Availability and power-reserve operation depend on the device and settings.
Card key not readThe card key must be held at the marked reader spot. A damaged card may need replacing.

Know what you are approving

Clear findings before a key repair

Ask for a written estimate that shows what the workshop found, what it proposes and what you’ll check when you collect your BMW.

What goes on the estimateExample layout
Findings
Battery and contacts, button response, remote signal and whether the car recognises the key for starting.
Proposed work
Which original parts can stay, what needs replacing and whether setup is required.
Timing
Expected completion after assessment, allowing for any board work, drying or parts sourcing.

Agree the total and applicable cover before work begins.

  1. Confirm the parts choice

Ask whether the quote uses genuine or alternative parts, what’s available and what can be recovered after water damage.

  2. Check what you need to bring

Ask whether the workshop needs the car and all available keys to test or set up the repair.

  3. Agree the handover checks

Confirm warranty duration and exclusions, what happens if repair is unviable, and whether you’ll get the old key or parts back. Test the fitted functions at collection.

FAQ

BMW Key Fob Questions Answered

Short answers to what owners ask about BMW key batteries and repairs. Ask us anything else on WhatsApp.

Ask on WhatsApp
What battery does a BMW key take?

Some keys use CR2032, others CR2450 or a rechargeable battery. Match the existing cell code and your vehicle handbook. Do not select a battery solely from the chassis designation.

Do I need to program the key after changing the battery?

A normal battery change generally preserves key identity. If operation does not return, check the correct battery, polarity and contacts, then test the key and vehicle. Programming is not an automatic remedy.

How long does a BMW key battery last?

It depends on the key and how it is used. Heat, Comfort Access and frequent use all shorten it.

Can I start my BMW if the key battery is dead?

Many models support emergency detection. Follow your handbook for the detection point and start sequence. A damaged or unrecognised key, or a weak vehicle battery, may still prevent starting.

Why does my car say key not detected?

Possible causes include a weak key battery, interference, shielding, key damage or a vehicle-side fault. The message alone does not identify the failed part.

My key got wet. Can it be saved?

Recovery depends on corrosion and component damage. Stop using or charging it. Remove a battery only if it has a user-accessible compartment and can be removed safely; do not pry open a sealed key. Arrange inspection before powering it again.

Can a broken key case be replaced?

A compatible case may retain the existing working board and transponder without new key programming. Check the blade, buttons and fit; a new case will not fix damaged electronics.

Can you make a key if I lost all my keys?

Send the model and year so we can confirm the supported replacement route. Proof of ownership and identity is required for replacement or access authorisation work; availability and lead time depend on the key system.

Why did both my keys stop working at once?

Check both keys away from interference and compare their battery condition. Shared symptoms justify vehicle battery, receiver and access-system checks; they do not prove a module has failed.

Do you collect the car?

Free pickup in Dubai is available for workshop repairs. Confirm scheduling, access and suitable transport if the vehicle cannot start. The Al Quoz workshop opens Monday to Saturday, 9am to 7pm.
