Classic BMW engines with a rubber cambelt

BMW Timing Belt Replacement in Dubai

Only a small group of BMW engines use a timing belt, mostly the M20 six cylinder, the M40 four cylinder and the M21 diesel found in E30, E28 and early E34 and E36 cars. On these engines a worn belt can snap and bend the valves. We confirm your engine first, then replace the belt, tensioner and related parts as one job.

BMW Timing Belt Replacement Costs in Dubai

These planning estimates apply to confirmed belt-driven classic BMW engines. They are not prices for a timing chain or an accessory belt. The engine, access, selected kit and condition of nearby components determine the written quote.

Estimated fitted budget

Belt and tensioner

AED 1,500–2,500

Compatible new belt and tensioner, installation, timing and tension checks, and a post-repair inspection. Assumes no slipped timing or internal engine damage.

Estimated combined budget

Belt kit and water pump

AED 2,000–3,500

Belt and tensioner work plus a compatible pump, required pump seal and coolant replenishment where that work is appropriate. Thermostat replacement is separate unless quoted.

Estimated expanded budget

Belt kit and front oil seals

AED 2,200–4,000

Belt-kit installation with confirmed accessible camshaft or crankshaft seal leaks addressed. The number of seals, access and worn sealing surfaces affect the scope.

Estimates are informed by published Dubai repair pricing, not fixed BMW Repair Dubai offers. They exclude VAT, initial assessment, recovery and internal engine repair. Parts, labor, required fluids, final checks and VAT are itemized in your quotation. We confirm the inspection fee and parts availability before booking.

Start with your model, year and any symptoms. We identify the fitted engine, including an engine swap where relevant, before ordering parts. Photos or further vehicle details can be requested privately if needed.

Not sure which engine you have? Tell us your model and year and we check the timing-drive type for you. We may request further identification privately when needed for parts matching. If your BMW uses a chain, our timing chain replacement page covers the checks for chain noise and timing faults.

BMW moved to chains on its six cylinder engines with the M50 in the early 1990s and on its four cylinder engines with the M43 a few years later. Timing chains have different maintenance requirements; condition, symptoms and the applicable engine guidance determine inspection and repair. That is why a timing belt quote for a modern BMW is almost always a mix up with the drive belt or the chain.

The belt engines up close

BMW Engines With a Timing Belt

All three engines are now classics, and most of the cars still on Dubai roads are kept by enthusiasts. Each one has its own points to watch.

M20Six cylinder petrol, 2.0 to 2.7 litres

The engine in the E30 325i and 320i, the E28 528e and the first E34 525i. It is known for heavy damage when the belt fails, because the valves meet the pistons. BMW service information specifies every second Inspection II for M20 and M21 engines, with replacement after four years at the latest regardless of mileage. The applicable service schedule is checked for the car.

Valve damage if the belt fails
M40Four cylinder petrol, 1.6 and 1.8 litres

Used in the later E30 316i and 318i and the first E36 316i and 318i. A simple engine, but the belt and tensioner still need regular replacement, and oil leaks from the front of the engine can soak the belt.

Belt and tensioner changed together
M21Six cylinder diesel, 2.4 litres

The diesel in the 324td and 524td. The belt and injection pump timing require the applicable M21 procedure. We confirm the parts, timing settings and checks for the fitted engine.

Pump timing checked with the belt

The M20 also came in a low revving version called the eta, used in the 325e and 528e, with the same belt layout as the 325i. On all three engines the timing belt drives the camshaft, and on the M20 it also turns the intermediate shaft. Getting every mark lined up during refitting is the part that takes experience, not the removal of the old belt.

Three parts that get mixed up

Timing Belt, Timing Chain and Drive Belt Compared

Many quotes for a BMW timing belt are really for something else. A rubber belt you can see at the front of a modern BMW is the drive belt, not the timing belt.

The timing belt sits behind a cover and keeps the crankshaft and camshaft in step. The timing chain does the same job inside the engine on newer BMWs. The drive belt runs the alternator, water pump on some engines, power steering and air conditioning from the outside of the engine, and it is covered on our serpentine belt replacement page.

On the M20 and M40 the drive belts and the timing belt sit close together at the front of the engine, so we inspect both during any belt job and tell you which ones actually need replacing.

Belts often fail with little warning

Signs of a Worn BMW Timing Belt

A timing belt can look fine from outside and still be close to failing, which is why age and mileage matter more than appearance. When there are signs, these are the ones to look for.

Cracks on the back of the belt

Fine cracks across the smooth side show the rubber has aged.

Shiny or worn teeth

Glazed or rounded teeth can slip on the pulley.

Oil on the belt

A leaking cam or crank seal softens the rubber quickly.

Whine or chirp from the front

A worn tensioner bearing often gives the first sound.

Rough running after a cold start

A belt that has jumped a tooth throws the timing out.

No record of the last change

On a classic BMW this alone is a reason to replace it.

If a timing slip or belt failure is suspected, stop safely, switch off and do not restart to test it. Arrange assessment and suitable recovery. Avoiding high revs does not make a damaged or incorrectly timed belt safe to drive.

The expensive outcome

What Happens When a BMW Timing Belt Snaps

When the belt breaks, the camshaft stops turning while the crankshaft keeps spinning. On the M20 and most belt engines the open valves are then struck by the rising pistons. The engine stops at once and will not restart.

  1. Do not keep crankingEvery attempt to start can add damage. Arrange recovery instead.
  2. Check before quotingFirst establish the mechanical timing and whether movement is safe. Appropriate damage checks may then include inspection, a borescope or controlled leakage testing.
  3. Head comes off if neededBent valves mean a cylinder head repair, with guides, rockers and the camshaft inspected.
  4. Belt job done properlyThe agreed engine repair and belt-kit installation follow the findings, with required seals and final checks.

The cost of a head repair after a snapped belt is many times the cost of a planned belt change. Our engine repair page explains cylinder head work in more detail.

The belt kit and related work

What a Full Timing Belt Job Includes

The belt and tensioner form the core job. Nearby seals, cooling parts and drive belts are assessed separately, so your quote makes clear what is needed and why.

Core belt replacement

A matched belt and tensioner

A compatible new timing belt and tensioner are quoted together. Genuine BMW and suitable supplier options are checked for fitment and availability before work is agreed.

  • New timing belt for the fitted engine
  • Matching tensioner and applicable fittings
  • Engine-specific timing and tension checks

A worn tensioner bearing can create noise or affect belt operation. Replacing the belt alone does not address that wear.

Related parts checked during access

If leaking

Cam and crank seals

Confirmed leaks are quoted so oil does not contaminate the new belt.

Condition and history

Water pump

Access may overlap. Pump condition, service history and the engine determine whether combined work makes sense.

With cooling work

Coolant and thermostat

Required coolant is included in the cooling-work quote. A thermostat is replaced only when separately needed and agreed.

If worn

Drive belts

Belts removed for access are inspected. Replacement of worn belts is listed separately in the quote.

Correct timing matters as much as new parts

We follow the applicable engine procedure for tensioning and checking timing, including controlled hand rotation where appropriate before startup. There is no universal tension setting for every BMW belt engine.

For new owners of an old BMW

Buying a Classic BMW With No Belt Record

Many E30s and E28s change hands with a thick history file but no clear date for the last timing belt. If there is any doubt, treat the belt as due. A belt change costs far less than a cylinder head, and it gives you a clear starting point for future servicing.

The same applies to cars brought into the UAE from elsewhere, project cars that have been stored and cars that have had engine work where the belt may have been reused.

Look for a sticker

Many workshops note the date and mileage on the timing cover.

Check the receipts

A dated invoice naming the belt and tensioner is the proof to keep.

Ask the seller

A vague answer is a reason to budget for a belt change straight away.

Get a pre purchase check

We can inspect the belt area and the engine before you buy.

Mileage and age both count

BMW Timing Belt Replacement Intervals

BMW service information 11 09 96 covers M20, M21 and M40 engines. It specifies replacement after four years at the latest, even when annual mileage is low. The service schedule and any more restrictive applicable instructions must also be checked.

M20 and M21

Every second Inspection II. The bulletin gives approximately 90,000 km between the relevant inspection milestones. Do not treat this approximate distance as permission to exceed the time limit.

M40

Every Inspection II, approximately 45,000 km in the referenced schedule. M40 should not inherit the longer interval used for M20 and M21.

Unknown replacement history

Do not assume that low mileage, a tidy engine or a recent purchase means the belt is current. Arrange an assessment and plan replacement when its age and history cannot be established.

A stored car still accumulates belt age. We check oil or coolant contamination, nearby components and the available service records. A visual check cannot certify the remaining life of the whole belt. Driving the car periodically is not a substitute for scheduled belt replacement.

A technician lining up the timing marks on a BMW M20 engine with the timing cover removed

Turning the engine by hand before the first start is the step that catches a belt fitted one tooth out. It takes a few minutes and protects the valves. If anything else is found during the job, we send photos and price it separately, and nothing extra is done without your approval. The old belt and tensioner are kept for you to see. We write the date and mileage on a label inside the bonnet, so the next owner or workshop knows exactly when it was done.

BMW Timing Belt Questions Answered

A classic BMW E30 parked in a Dubai garage with the bonnet open
Does my BMW have a timing belt or chain?

Most later BMW petrol and diesel engines use chains. Classic M20, M40 and M21 engines use timing belts. Tell us your model and year; we confirm the fitted engine and request additional details only when needed.

How often should the belt be replaced?

The referenced BMW service information specifies M20 and M21 at every second Inspection II, M40 at every Inspection II, and replacement after four years at the latest regardless of mileage. We check the applicable vehicle schedule; a six-year interval should not be assumed.

Is the drive belt the same thing?

No. The external drive belt operates accessories. The timing belt synchronizes crankshaft and camshaft movement. We identify the belt before quoting so you do not book the wrong service.

How much should I budget?

Estimated fitted budgets are AED 1,500–2,500 for belt and tensioner work, AED 2,000–3,500 with an applicable water-pump job, and AED 2,200–4,000 for belt work with confirmed front seal repairs. VAT and the initial assessment are extra. Your written quotation sets the actual total.

Should the water pump be replaced too?

It depends on pump condition, history and access overlap. We explain the benefit and price it separately if appropriate. A pump or thermostat is not automatically required on every belt replacement.

What if the belt has snapped or slipped?

Stop using the engine and do not keep trying to start it. Arrange recovery. We establish mechanical timing and safe inspection steps before evaluating internal damage; repair options are quoted after those findings.

Can I inspect the belt myself?

It sits behind covers, and a partial view does not establish its remaining life. Do not remove covers or inspect moving parts with the engine running. Service history, age and the applicable schedule matter even when visible rubber looks clean.

Will a new belt improve performance?

A correctly timed, healthy engine may feel the same after planned replacement. The purpose is maintaining correct timing and avoiding belt failure, not promising extra power.

How long does the work take?

The inspection, access and parts availability determine the schedule. A planned kit replacement and a snapped-belt damage investigation are different jobs. We confirm the expected workshop time after identifying the engine and repair scope.

Do you work on classic and engine-swapped BMWs?

We assess classic BMWs and confirm the fitted engine before selecting parts. Tell us about known swaps or modifications if you can. We check parts availability before dismantling for the agreed repair.

What parts and warranty are available?

Genuine BMW and suitable supplier options are quoted where available. The quotation identifies the chosen components. Confirm the written parts and workmanship warranty, duration and exclusions for your repair before approval.

Can you collect my BMW?

Free pickup is available in Dubai for driveable vehicles. If timing failure is suspected, request suitable recovery instead of driving. We confirm the arrangements and any recovery charge before collection.

What record will I receive?

The invoice should identify the kit and additional approved work. We record the replacement date and mileage and provide the agreed inspection findings so future maintenance can be planned from a clear starting point.
