Before you approve work

What changes your repair quote

A 550i oil leak, a charge-air leak and a gearbox fault each need different tests, parts and labour. Ask for an itemised quote with the confirmed source, the parts to be fitted and the checks that will verify the result.

When a repair has more than one option, compare access labour, part availability and cover on the fitted job. If additional work is found after access, ask for the revised scope and price before it goes ahead.

External oil or coolant leakSource, parts access and the condition of adjacent fittings affect labour and parts.
Smoke or oil consumptionAllow for diagnosis before pricing seal work, ventilation repairs or engine work.
Reduced power under loadQuote the confirmed ignition, fuel, air or boost fault. These repairs have different parts and labour.
Transmission or driveline faultConfirm the fitted gearbox and the fault before comparing fluid service, component repair or replacement.

Warning signs

Start with what your 550i is doing

Choose the symptom you can describe most clearly. Exact warning text and the conditions that trigger it help us plan the first check.

Oil pressure or temperature warningFollow the stop instruction in the display and discuss collection if the car cannot be driven safely.

Smoke or frequent oil top-upsTell us whether smoke comes from the tailpipe or under the bonnet, and how soon the oil warning returns.

Power drops when acceleratingNote engine temperature, speed and load. The same warning can point to several engine or driveline checks.

Shudder or hesitation in gearDistinguish a delay selecting Drive from a shudder at steady road speed or on a tight turn.

Battery warning or slow crankingTell us if it occurs while driving, after parking or after a battery replacement.

Service due or history missingShare the service display and invoices so we can split due maintenance from fault testing.

If the display tells you to stop, pull over safely and follow the vehicle’s instructions. Keep the coolant cap closed while the engine is hot.

Model fitment

Which BMW 550i do you drive

The earlier 550i uses a 4.8-litre naturally aspirated V8 from the N62 family. The later 550i Sedan and 550i Gran Turismo use a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 from the N63 family. Turbo plumbing and engine revisions change what we inspect and what parts we quote.

Send the model year, body style and VIN when requesting a fitted quote. Build dates and market specifications can differ from the registration year, especially on imported cars.

Oil loss and smoke

Trace where the oil is going

A burning smell after parking and smoke at the tailpipe are different clues. Bring the top-up dates, mileage and a safely recorded photo or video if you have one.

Oil leak inspection example

Fresh oil on the engine or undertrayTrace the highest fresh oil mark. Oil can travel along covers or the undertray before it drips, so the drip location alone can mislead.

Blue exhaust smoke after idleRecord whether it appears after a long idle or during acceleration. Consider crankcase ventilation and valve stem seals. On twin-turbo cars, check relevant turbo oil paths when findings support it.

Frequent top-ups with little visible smokeRecord how much oil you add and the distance between top-ups. Check external loss first and agree whether a measured consumption test is needed.

Oil pressure warningFollow the stop instruction and tell us whether the engine was hot, idling or under load when it appeared.

For a confirmed external leak, compare the seal or gasket job with a housing replacement only where the housing condition supports it. See our BMW oil leak repair service.

Cooling system checks

Find why the coolant warning returns

A falling level, a high-temperature warning and a cooling fan running hard each give the technician different clues. Share any recent cooling-system work so we know which areas have been opened.

Find the leak path

Inspect the reservoir, connections and accessible lines. A pressure test where appropriate can help expose a leak that is dry when the car arrives.

Identify the affected circuit

On the twin-turbo V8, confirm whether the evidence points to engine cooling or associated turbo or charge-air cooling plumbing on the fitted version.

Verify the repair after filling

Confirm the specified coolant, filling and bleeding procedure. Agree how the workshop will recheck the level and warning after the repair.

See what is covered by a BMW coolant leak assessment.

Reduced power and shudder

Separate engine power loss from driveline faults

Tell us exactly what the car was doing when the warning or vibration appeared. These patterns help decide which systems to test first.

Power drops during accelerationUse the fault record and conditions to decide which ignition, fuel pressure or air readings to compare. Add boost and charge-air checks on the twin-turbo V8 where indicated.
The car stumbles on the first startRecord how long the car stood and whether the roughness clears as it warms up. Cylinder-specific faults and live data guide which checks come next.
Drive or Reverse takes time to engageCheck the fitted transmission, fault records, leaks and mounts. Ask whether the quote covers a fluid service or a separate gearbox fault investigation.
Shudder at a steady speed or on tight turnsSeparate road-speed vibration from a gear-change event. On xDrive cars, tyre sizes and wear can help guide checks alongside the driveline findings.

For the next step, see BMW engine diagnosis and repair or BMW gearbox diagnosis and repair.

Battery and alternator

Test the charging system under the right conditions

A 550i that cranks slowly after parking needs a different starting check from one that shows a charging warning on the move.

After parkingCheck battery condition

Share the battery age and recent work. Test its condition and confirm the battery type, capacity and whether registration applies.

Compare supply voltage and charging behaviour under the relevant load. Check the belt, tensioner, connections and grounds if indicated.

If the battery and charging output test well, discuss a parked-current check. Mention recent accessories or repairs that changed when the fault appears.

Service records and buying checks

Build a maintenance plan for your 550i

Start with the service display and invoices. We separate work that is due by date or mileage from wear items and faults that need diagnosis.

Match oil and filters to the engineCheck the oil approval, quantity and filter for the fitted V8. Confirm that the quote lists the service reset and what the inspection covers.

Check brakes, tyres and steering wearAsk for pad and disc findings by axle and treat the brake fluid due date separately. Mention vibration under braking, uneven tyre wear or steering play.

Review gearbox and driveline recordsConfirm the fitted units before specifying fluids, pan, filter or seals. Raise a shift complaint separately and share any recent fluid work.

Set a baseline if you are buying the carAsk for the first start from cold, a stored-fault scan and an underbody inspection. An itemised report helps you separate immediate repair costs from later maintenance.

Bring the gearbox service invoice if the car has one. A date, mileage and list of parts are more useful than a receipt that only says “transmission service.” If you are comparing cars, see the BMW pre-purchase inspection.

BMW 550i repair questions

Prices, fitment, diagnosis and collection in Dubai.

How much is a BMW 550i diagnostic check

An initial fault-code scan and report start from AED 150. If the fault needs a pressure test, electrical measurements, a controlled road test or dismantling, we agree what to do next and what it costs.

Can I get a quote for blue smoke from my 550i

Send the model year, mileage, top-up history and a safely recorded video if available. We first determine where the oil is going. Ventilation faults, valve stem seals and turbo-related oil paths require different repairs.

Does every BMW 550i have a twin-turbo engine

Earlier 550i models use a naturally aspirated 4.8-litre V8. Later 550i models use a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8. We use the VIN and build data to confirm your engine before ordering parts.

Does a drivetrain malfunction mean I need a gearbox

The warning can come from several systems. If it appears while the engine loses power, ignition, fuel and air data may be relevant. A delay when selecting gear or a shudder at steady speed needs a separate driveline check.

Can I book alternator replacement from a battery warning

We can inspect the charging system first. Alternator output, battery condition, the belt drive, connections and sensor data help determine what needs replacing.

What happens if the coolant warning returns after a top-up

Tell us which warning appeared, how much was added and when it returned. A repeat warning needs diagnosis. If the display instructs you to stop, pull over safely and follow the instruction. Keep the coolant cap closed while the engine is hot.

Can you inspect a 550i before I buy it

Yes. Ask for the vehicle to be available from cold, bring its records and allow time for a scan, underbody inspection and a road check where practical. We can separate immediate repairs from scheduled work in the findings.

Can you collect a BMW 550i in Dubai

Dubai pickup and delivery are available. Share your location and whether the vehicle can move safely so we can confirm the collection arrangements and any recovery charges before dispatch.
