Tyre pressure sensors and warnings

BMW TPMS Sensor Replacement in Dubai

A tyre pressure warning that will not clear, or a message saying the monitor has failed, usually means a sensor has stopped talking to the car. We find which wheel it is, fit the right sensor for your BMW, register it and make sure every tyre reads correctly before you leave.

Two different systems

How BMW Tyre Pressure Monitoring Works

Not every BMW has sensors in its wheels. Depending on the model, year and market, BMW uses one of two systems, and only one of them has sensors that can fail.

Direct system

Sensors inside each wheel

A small sensor on the back of each valve measures the real pressure and temperature, then sends it to the car by radio. The dashboard can show the pressure of each tyre.

  • Fitted to most recent BMWs in the GCC
  • Each sensor has its own sealed battery
  • Shows which tyre is low
Indirect system

Wheel speed comparison

No sensors in the wheels. The car compares how fast each wheel turns using the ABS sensors. A soft tyre turns slightly faster, which triggers the warning.

  • Found on many older and some European models
  • Must be reset after inflating or changing tyres
  • Faults point to ABS sensors, not wheel sensors

Not sure which one you have? If your iDrive or dashboard shows a pressure figure for each tyre, your car uses the direct system with wheel sensors. If it only shows a status message, it is most likely indirect. We confirm it from the chassis number in a minute.

Read the message first

Low Pressure Message or Sensor Fault?

BMW shows different messages for a tyre that has lost air and for a system that has stopped working. Telling them apart saves a wasted trip, because only one of them is a sensor problem.

What you seeWhat it usually meansWhat to do
Low tyre pressure on one wheel

That tyre really is soft, from a puncture, a leaking valve or heat changes.

Check and inflate the tyre cold. If it drops again, have it checked for a puncture.

Flat tyre warning

A sudden large loss of pressure in one or more tyres.

Slow down and stop where you can. Run flat tyres have a limited range, so call us or roadside help.

Tyre pressure monitor failed or inactive

The car cannot hear one or more sensors, often a dead sensor battery.

Check pressures by hand, then book a sensor scan.

Warning after new wheels or tyres

Sensors missing, damaged during fitting or not yet registered.

Drive for a while so the car can learn them. If it stays, bring it in.

Warning that comes and goes

A weak sensor battery, or a sensor on the edge of range.

Note which wheel and when, then book a scan.

Failure signs

Signs a BMW TPMS Sensor Has Failed

Sensors do not fail with a bang. They fade, drop out and come back, which is why the warning can feel random at first.

Warning stays on with correct pressures

All four tyres are right, yet the message will not clear.

One tyre shows dashes

The display shows no reading for one wheel instead of a number.

Sensor is many years old

Sealed batteries usually last around five to ten years.

Valve stem leaks or is corroded

The metal valve and nut corrode, and the tyre slowly loses air.

Warning started after tyre fitting

Sensors can be cracked or bent when a tyre is changed.

Readings jump around

A tyre shows odd or changing figures that do not match a gauge.

Before buying a sensor

When the Warning Is Not the Sensor

Plenty of tyre pressure warnings have nothing to do with a failed sensor. We rule these out first, because a new sensor will not fix any of them and the warning would simply come back.

Tyre

A slow puncture

A nail or screw in the tread lets air out over days. The sensor is doing its job by warning you, so the tyre needs a repair or replacement instead.

Valve

A leaking valve core

The small core inside the valve can loosen or get sand in it and leak slowly. A new core and cap cost very little and stop the leak.

Rim

A bent or corroded rim

Air can escape where the tyre bead meets a damaged rim edge. A kerb strike is the usual cause, and rim repair fixes the leak.

Pressure

Pressures set when hot

Setting pressures in the afternoon heat leaves the tyres low once they cool down, so the warning appears the next morning.

System

An ABS sensor fault

On cars with the indirect system, a faulty wheel speed sensor or wiring stops the pressure monitor working. The ABS or DSC light often comes on as well.

Module

Receiver or software fault

Less often, the part of the car that receives the sensor signals has a fault or needs a software update. Our diagnostic tool shows this clearly.

Small part, several jobs

Inside a BMW Tyre Pressure Sensor

Each sensor is a sealed unit about the size of a matchbox, clamped to the valve on the inside of the rim. These are the pieces that matter when it fails, and the reason a dead sensor is replaced as a whole unit rather than repaired.

1

Pressure and temperature cell

Measures the air inside the tyre several times a minute while driving.

2

Radio transmitter

Sends each reading to the car with a unique sensor ID.

3

Sealed battery

Built into the housing on BMW sensors, so the whole sensor is replaced when it runs down.

4

Valve stem, nut and seal

Usually renewed with every new sensor so the valve does not leak.

Choosing the sensor

Genuine, OEM or Programmable Sensors

Three kinds of sensor fit a BMW. All of them can work well when they are matched to the car. The difference is price, availability and how they are set up.

Genuine BMW
What it is
The sensor sold through BMW parts with the BMW part number.
Setup
Usually learnt by the car after a short drive.
Right for
Owners who want the original part, and newer models.
OEM supplier
What it is
The same type of sensor from the company that makes it for BMW, in its own box.
Setup
Same as the genuine part.
Right for
Original quality at a lower price, when available.
Programmable
What it is
A universal sensor loaded with the correct BMW protocol using a TPMS tool.
Setup
Programmed or cloned to the car before fitting.
Right for
Quick fixes, older models and second wheel sets.

How the job runs

How We Replace a BMW TPMS Sensor

The sensor sits inside the tyre, so replacing it means taking the tyre off the rim. Done carefully, it takes very little time per wheel.

Scan

A TPMS tool reads every sensor to find which one is silent, weak or damaged.

Confirm

We check the system type and sensor part from your chassis number and quote before ordering.

Unseat

The tyre is broken from the rim on the sensor side, keeping the bead tool clear of the sensor.

Fit

New sensor with a new valve, seal and nut, tightened to the correct torque.

Balance

Tyre refitted, inflated to the door pillar figure and the wheel balanced.

Register

The car learns the new sensor, and we confirm all four readings on the dash.

Prices

TPMS Sensor Replacement Cost in Dubai

The price depends on how many sensors are replaced, which kind of sensor is used and whether the tyres are run flats. These published figures give you a feel for the market before you call.

Sensors and programmingAED 400

Four OEM grade sensors for all car brands, with programming listed at AED 50.

Source, Dubai garage listing on YallaMotor, checked November 2026.
BMW tyre serviceFrom AED 190

Tyre fitting service for BMWs, rising to AED 285 for run flat tyres. Balancing is listed from AED 170.

Source, Golden Horse BMW price list, before 5 percent VAT, checked November 2026.
BMW electrical diagnosticsFrom AED 350

A full diagnostic check, useful when the warning comes from an indirect system or a wiring fault.

Genuine BMW sensors cost more than OEM grade ones. We confirm the exact total for your car once we know how many sensors need replacing. If the scan shows the sensors are fine and the real fault is a puncture or a valve, we tell you that before any sensor is ordered.

Common situations

New Rims, Second Wheel Sets and Run Flats

A lot of TPMS warnings start right after other wheel work. These are the three situations we see most, and how each one is handled.

Aftermarket or new rims

New rims do not come with sensors. Your old sensors can often be moved across if they are in good condition, or new ones fitted and registered to the car.

Move or replace

A second set of wheels

Each set needs its own four sensors. The car learns the set that is fitted, so swapping wheels does not mean reprogramming every time.

Four sensors per set

Run flat tyres

Run flats hide a puncture because the car still drives normally. The pressure monitor is the main way you know, so a working sensor matters more on these tyres.

Keep sensors working

Local conditions

Why Dubai Heat Affects Tyre Pressure Readings

Air expands as it warms, so tyre pressure changes through the day here more than in cooler places. Knowing this stops a lot of false alarms, and it explains why a warning can appear one morning and vanish by lunchtime.

Morning

Tyres are at their coldest, so this is the right time to check and set pressures.

Afternoon

Hot roads and sun push pressures up. Letting air out at this point leaves the tyres soft at night.

Winter nights

Cooler nights in winter can bring up a low pressure warning first thing in the morning.

Sensor life

Long periods of heat are hard on the sealed battery inside each sensor.

Clearing the warning yourself

Resetting the Tyre Pressure Monitor on a BMW

After you inflate the tyres, the system often needs to be told the new pressures are correct. The menu names change between models, but the steps are close to this.

  1. Set all four tyres to the pressures on the door pillar label, with the tyres cold.
  2. Turn the ignition on with the car parked.
  3. Open the vehicle status or tyre pressure menu in iDrive, or use the button on the indicator stalk on cars without iDrive.
  4. Choose the reset or confirm tyre pressures option and start driving.
  5. The car completes the reset while you drive. The message usually clears within a few minutes.

If the warning returns straight after a reset, or one tyre shows no reading at all, the problem is a sensor, not the pressure.

By model

Tyre Pressure Sensors Across BMW Models

What we usually find, by model family. The exact system on your car depends on its year and where it was first sold.

3 and 4 SeriesF30, F32, G20, G22

Direct sensors on most GCC cars. Older E90 cars often use the indirect system.

5 SeriesF10, G30, G60

Direct sensors, with sensor batteries on early F10 cars now well past their usual life.

X5 and X6E70, F15, G05, G06

Direct sensors on large wheels, often damaged during tyre changes.

X3 and X4F25, G01, G02

Direct sensors, with many owners running a second wheel set.

7 SeriesF01, G11, G70

Direct sensors that also feed the pressure display in the instrument cluster.

M carsM2, M3, M4, M5

Track and road wheel sets each need their own sensors registered.

FAQ

BMW TPMS Questions Owners Ask

Clear answers about BMW tyre pressure sensors, warnings and replacement.

Ask us on WhatsApp
Why is my BMW tyre pressure warning on when the tyres are fine?

Usually a sensor battery has run down or a sensor has been damaged, so the car cannot read that wheel. A TPMS scan shows which one.

How much does BMW TPMS sensor replacement cost in Dubai?

A Dubai garage lists four OEM grade sensors at AED 400 with programming at AED 50, and BMW tyre service starts from AED 190 before VAT. Genuine sensors cost more. We confirm your price after scanning.

Can the battery in a BMW TPMS sensor be replaced?

No. The battery is sealed inside the sensor housing, so the whole sensor is replaced when it runs down.

How long do BMW tyre pressure sensors last?

Most last around five to ten years, depending on how much the car is driven and how hot it gets.

Do I need to replace all four sensors?

Not always. If one has failed and the others are young, one sensor is enough. If they are all the same age, the rest often fail soon after, so replacing them together saves repeat tyre work.

Does a new sensor need programming?

Genuine and OEM sensors are usually learnt by the car after a short drive. Programmable sensors are set up with a TPMS tool before fitting.

Does my BMW have TPMS sensors in the wheels?

If the dashboard shows a pressure figure for each tyre, yes. If it only shows a status message, it probably uses the indirect system without wheel sensors.

Can I move my sensors to new rims?

Yes, if they are in good condition and the rims accept them. We check them before moving them across.

How long does TPMS sensor replacement take?

One sensor is a short job once the part is in stock. The tyre comes off the rim and is balanced again, so four sensors take longer than one.

Do you collect the car?

Yes. We offer free pickup in Dubai, and the work is done at our Al Quoz workshop, open Monday to Saturday, 9am to 7pm.
